The Class Schedule and Instructional Record (CSIR) process compiles data concerning teaching activity and instructional space utilization. UC Berkeley's Student Information System (SIS) is the system of record for all such data. This information influences resource allocation decisions at all levels of campus.
Specifically, SIS instructional data is used:
- by the Budget and Interdepartmental Relations Committee when it conducts FTE allocations;
- by the AP Bears system for use in faculty merit and promotion review;
- to distribute resources for Temporary Academic Support and faculty authorizations;
- to report instructional workload to the Office of the President and California Legislature;
- for annual space utilization reports affecting capital project funding;
- to determine whether a department is meeting its goals as outlined in individual departmental teaching policies (e.g., number of classes taught per ladder faculty);
- to keep track of average class size and types of courses taught by individual faculty;
- for ad hoc reporting.
We recommend that throughout the year departments ask their schedulers to review their CSIR data in the Student Information System (SIS) and Cal Answers as it becomes available, in order to ensure that it is as accurate as possible. To facilitate this review, twice each semester, in the 6th week and the 15th week, schedulers are sent their current semester data and a report identifying any data entry errors for review and correction. The report includes instructions, but if your schedulers need guidance on how to best enter the data or how to make corrections, please have them contact Research Analyst Kira Blaisdell-Sloan in the Office of Planning and Analysis at kbs@berkeley.edu.
