What is the completion rate, and how is it calculated?

The precise figure varies from year to year and by campus, but at Berkeley it has been:

  • 2018: 34% (9,944 out of 28,918)
  • 2016: 29% (7,515 out of 26,027)
  • 201432% (8,019 out of 25,402)
  • 2013: Survey not administered
  • 2012: 33% (8,209 out of 25,203)
  • 2011: 30% (6,982 out of 23,656)
  • 2010: 45% (11,203 out of 24,967)
  • 2009: 37% (9,016 out of 24,379)
  • 2008: 50% (11,833 out of 23,904)
  • 2007: 51% (11,957 out of 23,278)
  • 2006: 48% (10,717 out of 22,430)
  • 2005: 52% (11,673 out of 22,450)

The numerator is the number of undergraduate students who logged into the survey system and submitted their surveys. The denominator is the population of eligible undergraduates. Note that a larger number of students than what is shown above may have logged into the survey and responded to some items, but did not make it to the end to submit the survey. For example, in 2018, approximately 11,600 (40%) undergraduates at UC Berkeley responded to at least the first block of UCUES items. However, just under 10,000 students (34%) are counted in the completion rate, as they made it to the end of the survey and submitted it. Importantly, students are allowed to skip any question in the survey that they do not wish to respond to. Thus, not every student answers every item presented in the survey.
