Infrastructure Planning and Management

Establish Designated Emphasis in Infrastructure Planning and Management

Description of and Reasons for Anticipated Action

This new program is one of the educational initiatives under development by the Center for Global Metropolitan Studies, newly created as part of the Regional and Metropolitan Studies Initiative. In 2000-01, as part of the strategic planning process, Berkeley solicited proposals for new academic and research initiatives. From the 100+ ideas submitted, nine programmatic directions were identified for further development. This led to the selection of five semi-finalist themes, and invitations to submit final proposals. The Regional and Metropolitan Studies Initiative is one of the New Ideas proposals selected for funding. In addition to this and another DE, an AB in Urban and Metropolitan Studies is under consideration.

Relationship to Existing Campus Programs, Units, and Mission

The DE in Infrastructure Planning and Management will be offered by an interdisciplinary graduate group.

Resources

Five faculty FTE will be hired to hold various combinations of joint appointments between the departments of City and Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Architecture, Geography, Political Science, and Sociology. Two to three of these positions, and up to a dozen elective other faculty, will participate in the Infrastructure Planning and Management program, offering courses that meet requirements or electives each year. Classroom space will be provided by the University. Other resources to be determined.

Funding

Funding for the five faculty FTE and to administer the Center for Global Metropolitan Studies will be provided through the New Ideas Initiative.

Students

This program is expected to attract approximately 12 graduate students.

Employment Implications

This program, as well as the undergraduate major, will prepare students for positions in such fields as city and regional planning; public management and administration; for-profit and non-profit development and service provision; municipal, regional, and state government; urban design; public works and engineering; recreation planning; environmental planning; and public health.
