Concentration [formerly called track, area, option, etc.]

A concentration is a program of study within a degree program that emphasizes a specific area of the discipline. Concentrations usually have a defined course of study and are not listed on the diploma. Graduate concentrations appear on the transcript, but undergraduate concentrations usually do not (with a couple of preexisting exceptions). Establishment of undergraduate concentrations does not require approval outside of the college. Establishment of graduate concentrations requires approval of the Graduate Division. UC's Office of the President does not assign major codes to concentrations. In Berkeley's Student Information System, concentrations are defined as academic subplans.
