Other: As part of Berkeley's strategic planning process, proposals for new academic and research initiatives were solicited in 2000-01. From the approximately 120 proposals submitted, nine programmatic directions with a unique combination of newness, breadth and clear importance to the future of society were identified, and more developed ideas in these interdisciplinary areas were solicited in Fall 2003 as pre-proposals. Five of these pre-proposals were selected as the most innovative and promising themes and invited to submit final proposals. Of the five semi-finalist themes, two or three will be recommended for funding, with a final decision expected this spring. The five themes are: the Future of the Planet; Nanosciences and Nanoengineering; Regional and Metropolitan Studies Initiative; Humanities, Technology, and Art/Design for the 21st Century; and Computational Biology. Next year's 5-Year Perspective will provide more detailed information on new academic programs stemming from this effort.
