Other:   As part of Berkeley's strategic planning process, proposals for new academic and research initiatives were solicited earlier this year.  From the approximately 120 proposals submitted, nine programmatic directions were identified that have a unique combination of newness, breadth and clear importance to the future of society.  Formal proposals for programs in these interdisciplinary areas will be solicited in 2002-03.  The areas are:  computational biology; nanosciences and nanoengineering; society and technology; cultural evolution, preservation, and extinction; metropolitan studies; international relations and global security; behavioral economics; complex systems, design, and human interfaces; and new media.  Though we're at too preliminary a stage of development to be able to provide the usual one-page detail, we wanted to alert you to our intentions.  Next year's 5-Year Perspective will provide more detailed information on our plans for programs in these areas.
