OPA Frequently Asked Questions

How do I download the academic calendar to my electronic datebook?

When viewing the academic calendar for the terms that you chose, click the link for:
  • "Download as iCalendar (.ics) File" if you want to import these academic calendar events into most current calendar software, including Apple iCal, Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, and Oracle Calendar.
  • "Download as vCalendar (.vcs) File" if you want to import these academic calendar events into Palm Calendar or any older calendar software.
  • "Subscribe to Internet Academic Calendar" if you want to subscribe directly to the UC Berkeley academic calendar.

When you click either the iCalendar or vCalendar link, you will see a dialog box asking if you want to open or save the .ics/.vcs file. In most cases, you will want to save the file to your computer before importing it into your electronic calendar. Once you've saved the file, simply follow the import procedure for your particular calendar software.

An internet calendar subscription is an automatically updated calendar stored on a website that you can view (read-only) with software such as Microsoft Outlook 2007 or Apple iCal. When you click on this link, you may see a dialog box asking what application should be used to open the calendar, if you haven’t already defined a default application. After that, you’ll see a dialog box asking if you want to add a new calendar; answering "Yes" will then display the academic calendar in your desktop calendar software, where it should be automatically updated when we change the master calendar on the OPA website. Click here for more info on using internet calendar subscriptions in Outlook 2007.

No matter which option you choose, events will appear in your calendar software according to the following rules:

  • Each event will appear as an all-day event;
  • Each event includes the term name (i.e., "Fall Semester 2004");
  • We do not include any event that has not yet been assigned a date; and
  • Events that encompass a range of dates (i.e., they have both start and end dates) appear twice as "First day of [event]" and "Last day of [event]".

If you have questions or comments about the academic calendar, please contact Sandy Ellison.
